InanePara 17: Stern Advice

stern advice

“The message is not given to you outright; never.” he said in a harsh voice. Have patience, you will fit right in. With this flamboyant personality that you have, you’re bound to pass muster in anything you desire one way or another. I distinctly feel it. Success is what makes you tick! Just remain unaffected, friendly and never lose momentum as you go on.

And it happens again!

Seems like I’m losing my car, bit by bit. Last night, to my utter surprise, someone’s broken into my car for the fifth time this year. It was about 12 o’clock when I, holding a cup of tea, became aware of the fact.

Shattered into pieces

I was simply incredulous. This time they’ve broken the driver’s window, have stolen the AirBag and I simply didn’t know what to say or do. Again, I found that little piece of paper, having the phone number of this local Police station which made me all the more disconsolate. Last time it was the stereo and now the AirBag. Fortunately and unlike the last time, I could get the car started myself and have driven it to someplace safe, miles off.

I mean if there are not enough jobs around, some folks, most probably struggling with making the ends meet, decide to earn a few bucks this way. I wish they simply asked for it and I dare say the owner would be happy to pay them what they earn selling these parts and evade the hassle of fixing the car. They sure don’t give a hoot what transpires anyway.

Feeling dejected, I threw my tea out and returned home. 2:30 in the morning and I’ve had my mock IELTS test in 9 hours’ time. (And the scores, eh?)

A Comparison of Themes

The Lottery” (Shirley Jackson) vs. “The Most Dangerous Game” (Richard Connell)

The Most Dangerous Game The Lottery

Not all stories are perfect in terms of their components. As for the theme, for instance, the sole purpose of some stories may be simply to provide suspense or surprise, yet it serves as the controlling idea or central insight. I hereby am about to be comparing the theme of the following short stories in brief.

From what I have perceived, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, being classified in the genre of horror is relatively similar to Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”, even though the latter has a discernible shade of adventure in it as well. Obviously, as the content of the mentioned stories are quite different, it would neither seem appropriate nor fair to try to find and compare componential hinges in them. Still, there are actually a number of elusive overlaps by which it proves to be possible to compare them, up to a certain extent.

Inspecting the theme of each story, one of the first common elements would be “reluctance”. In “The Lottery” it is the reluctance of people to reject outdated traditions and practices. They are either reluctant to refuse the habit of using scapegoats or are reluctant to explicitly declare that they do not agree with such a barbaric ritual. By the same token, in “The Most Dangerous Game” it comes into play right from where Rainsford begins to expose his ideas till he reaches Zaroff’s favorite hobby. He is reluctant to agree with Whitney, to play Zarroff’s sport and to mind his destiny.

Regarding similarities, the second delicately implemented factor attempted by the author is people, their beliefs and how it affects them during the course of time. The role “belief” has had in “The Most Dangerous Game” was the very cause of how Rainsford fared. It also served as a determinant factor by which he could or could not succeed. Likewise, in “The Lottery” the reason why this dreadful and silent chaos existed in the new England village was the belief they have carried for a long period of time.

Turning to the point where they differ, while trying to put emphasis on the fact that the wickedness of ordinary people can be just as horrifying as the heinous crime of a serial killer, what differentiates “The Lottery” from “The Most Dangerous Game” is the resistance of their characters. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford is always resisting. He is the lever to convey the sense of objection. On the other side, in “The Lottery” the characters are participating in a long-lived nonsense uncontrollably.

All in all, the sole thing that remains is that by perusing both cases, finding overlaps becomes possible and that is when the second question arises; the question of determining more delicate points by which two components can be analyzed and synthesized.

InanePara 16: A Vacant Balcony

Vacant

He no longer wanted to attend that room, and with just cause, it was nothing but a playground for some vapid narcissists and their inept ideas. Every day he whispered words to himself, to keep him unruffled. Workers are simply green in what they do, for good. That was what he profoundly believed in. He was no ascetic. Nor was he a loaner of any sort. Had he known his father was eager to pay top dollar for this foolish position he was witnessing, he would never let his dad exhort him to enroll. He just thought, some fellow workers deserved to get canned. Like he did, two years ago after his thirtieth year being the CEO of his company!

Tangerine

The tangerine was bored out of his mind. He used to dangle from that rope before it had snapped. He thought to himself about the reason behind the prevalence of such incidents. He came to believe that people are more and more willing to make poor quality stuff and pass them off as valuable goods. ‘Hey!’ said the calendar, incredulous. The tangerine was nearly jostled by his remark. They used to be friends a while back. Before that piece of rope butted in with its’ slender, fluffy body. But that was the past. They’ve been through thick and thin together and now were not contemplating to desert each other. Smiling at each other, they jumped down into the sink.

InanePara 14: The Porcupine Seller

Little Boy

Convey my apologies to your father, will you?” said the driver. The kid went away, still thinking about the days he’s been deprived of a normal home life. People on the other side of the street were in the middle of a scuffle, raving at one another. He went closer and asked if they wanted a porcupine. A man asked about their provenance, playing dumb and forgetting about his pugnacious manner. The boy told him all he knew about them although he was sure it was more of a rhetorical question. His manner was always perfectly amicable to others. He then went off but saw that mean-looking dog again, craving to devour what he had in his basket. Fortunately, the driver had arrived at the scene. They waited for a good hour for things to get settled. At the end, everyone pretended they were happy and the dog was grinning from ear to ear.

InanePara 13: The Story of His Nose

rednose

Rafael couldn’t abide dull people. Especially those who were involved in a variety of activities and still, they were dull. During the week he kept a low profile and tried his best to steer clear of those lame friends who he knew were deadly dull. Others had nothing on him when it came to entertaining others. One day rubbing his eyes, he saw himself in the mirror and all of his hopes and dreams suddenly dwindled. Thoughts swarmed into his head as he saw his red nose had vanished. Since then was always with his old friends, and they happily lived a dull life together.

Bee

Feeling groggy they settled down. They were raised in Moscow – the place in which there was simply seldom any categorical assurance for anything. Anyway, it was no good getting angry. They just deemed it prudent to lie down for a while and rest. Being famous for their volatile tempers, others would know that they have always craved attention and were not patient at all. Bees are such attentive listeners. Bears, on the other side, believe their sting is not lethal to them. When they can’t keep their hands to themselves, they know they won’t get swarmed by them if they have a little luck. Thankfully, bees understand them but they wish their sting was more potent than what it is. And that’s how compromise works in the real world.

InanePara 11: Reading is Fundamental

Reading

Reading is quite a rewarding activity. Even when you rashly decide to go through different articles, you will inevitably gain something new. The average commuter would not always welcome a chance to read a page or two on their commute but statistically speaking, by reading only a couple of pages a day, the odds are you’ll obtain a good deal of information on selected topics over the course of the time. On the one hand, you should always remind yourself to take something to read so that when the right opportunity comes along you could take it. And looking for different incentives to keep you on the right track is significant, too. It might sound trivial, but the only thing that’s of paramount importance is that even if you consider it merely a daily grind, you should just stick to it and refrain from being exasperated.

InanePara 10: Leonardo

He didn’t take the hint and went off on his own. The children were speculating about his whereabouts. Even the thought of it was such a creepy nightmare to them. There was one thing which was for sure, he couldn’t abide people who were inconsiderate. He’s never exceeded the speed limits and likewise has never been exhilarated by speed. That day morning, I asked whether he was going to the lake with us but he reluctantly refused, as his mind was pretty occupied with vermin and other varied threats residing there. Leonardo was such a fussy eater as well and he liked lavish gifts, generous portions of food and so forth. Alas, he was gone. We’ll never forget that other turtles has had nothing on him when it came to diligence and earnestness.
